Food Handler Classes – August 2017

The “Texas Food Establishment Rules (TFER)” was recently revised and updated. A major change in the revision now requires all food employees to complete an accredited food handlers training program within 60 days of employment, effective September 16, 2016. In order to help restaurants provide training to their employees, our local agency (accredited by the TDSHS) will be offering this 2-hour course required for all food service employees to help promote the service of safe food.  Employees will be able to attend here in Erath County. Food Camp 2017

Once again this year, Food Camp will be hosted by TSU Wildlife, Sustainability, and Ecosystem Sciences (Paula McKeehan and her students) in partnership with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. It’s gonna be a blast! Growing Up Green is a one day camp teaching the use of fresh produce and herbs to season foods, safe kitchen practices, waste reduction, and various gardening and food preparation techniques! FOODS Everything you need to know about entering a food item in Youth Fair. 1. Choose one or more categories Desserts (brownies, drop cookies, bar cookies, cakes, pies, candy, etc.) Decorated Cakes – can use fondant, frosting tips, etc. Snacks – trail mix, granola, fruit leather, jerky, etc. Food Baskets (creative container with at least one homemade item such as bread, salsa, etc). 4-H Food Challenge & Food Show 2016

Food Challenge At the Food Challenge, teams of 3 to 5 students receive a list of ingredients and have 40 minutes to create a dish. The teams then present their dish to judges, and are scored on preparation, serving size, food safety concerns, nutritional value and cost. Students qualify at the country and district level to compete at the state contest. This year we are doing something a little different. 2015 4-H Food Challenge

More than 120,000 youth participate in the 4-H Food & Nutrition Project each year, learning how to prepare nutritious and safe meals and snacks, and adopt behaviors that can help reduce their risk for chronic disease. This contest challenges teams of 4-Hers to create a dish using a pre-determined set of ingredients.
